April 30, 2004 Gearing up for the electionsThe CLA's Political Action Task Force has prepared positions and tactics for the library community in anticipation of the next Canadian federal election. In their statement, they assert that "The next federal election, expected this year, is an excellent opportunity to improve the quality of Canadian policy debate and information about the important role libraries play in the nation's success." April 27, 2004 Radical bookstore destroyed!Spartacus books, Vancouver's collectively-run, non-profit, radical bookstore, has been destroyed by fire. This bookstore, had been in operation for over 30 years and was a critical part of the Vancouver activist and radical communities. Cerridwen wants to give voice to the stories and the people who are not usually represented in mainstream publications. April 21, 2004 Information Rights WeekInformation Rights Week is an annual activity of the Canadian Library Association (CLA) to bring attention to the importance of information policy in Canadian life. April 2, 2004 IMF heaps praise on CanadaAccording to a Finance Canada Press Release, the International Monetary Fund gives a strong endorsement of Canada's economic, fiscal and monetary policies. The IMF concludes that Canada has "considerable success" in fiscal management. source: Canadian Activist Network listserv(CDNAct) Severe erosion of funding for school libraries in CanadaOn a related note, both funding and teacher-librarians are scarce in Canadian school libraries. According to the Canadian Press NewsWire (Nov 11, 2003), The Québec Education Department allocates only $3.75 per student for the purchase of books for school libraries, said Jocelyne Dion, president of the Coalition for School Libraries. That's a pittance considering the average price of an elementary-level book in Québec is $17, she said. In 1992, there were about 140 trained librarians and library technicians in Québec but only about 40 remain, said Dion.
