Enjoy happy ad-free interneting with the Firefox AdBlock plug-in! No more ads! Happy life!
After you’ve installed the ad-on, you can right-click on an ad, select the “block ad” option and ba-da-bing, ba-da-boom, you’re good to go and the ad disappears.
One tip: if you want to block a whole ad-supplier, you can trim the source address to its roots and block everything coming from that site. For example, say the ad’s coming from
http://www.ads.com/asdr/bla_bla_bla/more_stuff/
when the ad block window comes up, trim it down to
http://www.ads.com
Cheers to Matt G. for the tip and peace of mind.

If you have a Unix-based computer, including a Macintosh, you could install a local proxy server called Privoxy (http://www.privoxy.org/) which will handle most ad-blocking for you at the moment. I almost never need to use the extension because of this. Of course, using a local proxy will slow down your surfing a bit - but I have not noticed it being at all onerous.

That sounds really cool. I’m actually turning my laptop over to Ubuntu this week so maybe I’ll give it a go. I have to say, though: I love the satisfaction of the before and after effect — watching a site go from loud and obnoxious to being full of empty spaces with little type that says, meekly and with all due embarassment, “advertisement”.
