On Freedom

Kim Antieau has written an open letter to the library board of the Fort Vancouver Regional Library to express her anger over the board’s decision to filter the internet on the libary’s computers. It seems as though (although it isn’t explicitly clear in the letter) that the decision was taken in the hopes of getting in return, funding for new library buildings. It sounds like something the Free Range Librarian said yesterday on her blog:

Well, you know what we’re told on ALA Council: it’s a “win” if it doesn’t disrupt library funding.

It’s that time of year again, Freedom to Read Week. On that topic, Toni Samek gave a interview to the University of Alberta Radio CSJR. In her words:

The interview was an opportunity to talk about librarians as part of the Freedom to Read initiatives — but about librarianship in general.

The show will available on the CSJR News website in the afternoon of Friday the 24th. From that site, I found that they had interviewed a librarian from the Edmonton Public Library (EPL). Did you know that the EPL gives out a special library card that allows you to borrow books from the University of Alberta? What a great idea!

Social Forum of Information

In August 2004, in Buenos Aires, there was the 1st Social Forum of Information, Documentation and Libraries. Among other things, it accomplished the following:

The main outcome was that it raised the need to continue a permanent forum that has its presence through committes and working groups which will focus primarily on subjects like user formation, preservation of heritage documents, prison libraries, a School of Latin American Library Science Thought, the impact of OMC/ALCA on libraries, etc

You can read the Buenos Aires Declaration that came out of this forum.

Well, time has come for the 2nd Social Forum of Information, that will be held in Mexico City, in the Fall of 2006. To get involved, check it out.

BCLA: the power of collaboration

The BCLA is at it again, creating really interesting and inspiring conferences. This year’s is entitled “Sharing a Vision: the power of collaboration”. Here are some of the many interesting presentations:

  • Including the Socially Excluded: Community development strategies for public libraries: One of the speakers, Annette de Faveri, is part of the “Working Together Project”, a project to develop library services for the socially excluded started by the Vancouver Public Library but also running in other Canadian cities. You can check out an article written by de Faveri republished in Information for Social Change.
  • Beyond Article 19: Examining Library Services in the context of Broad Human Rights: A talk given by the incredible Toni Samek. She is currently working on a book “Librarianship and human rights : a 21st century guide” that should be published this year.
  • Libraries Across Borders: Assistance to libraries fund: Libraries Across Borders is one of BCLA’s interest committees and its mandate is “to give “under-libraried” areas within Canada and the World access to funding which will provide for the development and maintenance of local libraries.”
  • Ain’t on the G&M Bestseller List: I think this is done at the ALA. It’s a roundtable where people have 90 seconds to describe an item, usually alternative materials, that would be good to add in your library’s collection. Sounds like fun!

Next Sunday, on the Sunday Edition of CBC Radio One, there should be a really interesting debate about:

the trade-offs between security and privacy. What information do governments need to keep us safe? What protections do citizens have from intrusions? What is the importance of privacy in a democracy?

The Living Library

Thinking of the contraversy surrounding the publication of the Mahomet cartoons, and having read opinions both for and against their publication, I was thinking today that this situation really highlights the raison d’être of the Living Library. This was a project at the Malmö Public Library in Sweden where they would “lend” people of minority, including Imams, to the public in order to break down barriers and create cross cultural understanding.

Doing a quick superficial search on the Living Library, I came across this great site called Infospeak.org. Here’s what they have to say for themselves:
