Re-claiming media and public spaces

For next year’s Media Democracy Day, here’s a great book to put on display in your library: Autonomous Media: Activating resistance and dissent. From the publisher (Cumulus Press, a Montreal publisher interested in “social justice, human rights, and dissenting approaches to capitalist structures”) :

the only book of its kind in Canada that takes a critical look, and offers a dissenting approach, to media appropriation.

Montreal black print serials

In library school, one of the most dynamic speakers that gave a talk in one of our classes was Dorothy Williams, a Ph.D. student at McGill University. If you will be in Montreal on December 12th, make a point to go see her defend her thesis, entitled “Sankofa: recovering Montreal’s heterogeneous black print serials“. A fascinating subject and an incredibly interesting speaker.
