In the July/August 2005 issue of Utne, Chris Dodge, (who is, among other things, Utne’s librarian), writes two wonderful library related articles:
- The first, titled Knowledge for Sale? Are America’s public libraries on the verge of losing their way? touches on many aspects of all that is failing in today’s public libraries. This includes lack of funding, the commercialization of collection development, the Googlization of libraries, and the lack of radical cataloguing, or cataloguing for the people, as epitomized by Sandy Berman.
- The second, entitled The New Monastic Librarians, highlights the work of 5 exceptional librarians that are working hard to preserve our culture through libraries. These librarians are: Jim Danke, Julie Bartel and Brooke Young, Julie Herrada, and finally Jenna Freedman
